There is a growing amount of confirmed cases of coronavirus, and with that, dog owners may have concerns, and would like to be prepared for the spread of the illness. While we all have worries about our health, Dog owners are also apprehensive about how the coronavirus could affect their furry loved ones. Some of the most pressing questions we have are as follows:

  1. Can dogs get the new coronavirus (COVID-19)? At this time, experts believe it is improbable. The World Health Organization now advises that there is no evidence to suggest that dogs or cats can be infected with the new coronavirus. The CDC also seconds that opinion, stating that, “At this time, there is no evidence that companion animals including pets can spread COVID-19.”
  2. Can your dog get COVID-19? While there are a few reports that a dog tested positive for the virus, it is unlikely that your dog can get COVID-19 or spread it to you.
  3. Is there a coronavirus vaccine for dogs? Coronavirus is not a new disease. According to VCA Hospitals, other strains of coronavirus are a highly infectious disease that usually occurs in puppies. The condition is short-lived but could cause abdominal discomfort for a few days. It does not affect people, according to VCA.
  4. What if I have to self-quarantine because of COVID-19? The number one suggestion is to limit contact with your pet. This includes, petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked, and sharing food. Pet Owners should consider making alternate arrangements for their pets in case of illness. Still, if there is no alternative, washing your hands before and after every interaction is essential. Always wash your hands and practice good hygiene when you are cleaning your dogs. Also, be sure to clean your dog’s paws and face thoroughly. We use the K9 Clean Portable Dog Shower as it can hold warm water and is comforting to your pup. Be sure to get in touch with your vet if you notice a change in your dog’s health. If you need to make alternate arrangements for your dog, here are a few things you can do:

  • Call a family member or friend who can care for your pets and that your pet knows well if someone in your house becomes sick.
  • Have crates, food, and supplies on hand for your dogs.
  • Keep all your animal vaccines up to date in the event, boarding becomes necessary – although we consider this a last resort.
  • Be sure all medications are documented with dosages and administering directions. Include the prescription from your veterinarian will also be helpful.
  • Make sure your pets have their ID collars on and are micro-chipped. Dogs are always a great source of comfort to have around while this high-stress time when people are to stay home. They have been known to help lower blood pressure and ease the feeling of anxiety and stress.

K9clean.com can’t stress enough to our fellow Dog parents to always include their fur family in any emergency preparation (COVID-19 or otherwise) and ensure their pets have enough food, water, and shelter. Dog owners should know about the Coronavirus and any possible implications of it.  Be sure to discuss any concerns with your veterinarian.

We would love to hear from you. If you have suggestions or other ideas that you would love to add, please let us know!
